Daily Briefing – October 2, 2020

Governor Jay Inslee remains clueless that his anti-business campaign rhetoric is a significant factor in why Boeing is moving jobs to more business friendly states.

Newsmaker Interview

This week’s Newsmaker Interview is with House Republican Floor Leader Jacquelin Maycumber (R – Republic).  The Roanoke Conference’s 2019 Slade Gorton Rising Star Award winner has represented the 7th Legislative District (Northeast corner of the state) since 2017.  Among the topics Representative Maycumber discusses are the economic and environmental damage being caused by the state not properly managing our forests, the failure of the Democrats to condemn the repeated attacks on police officers, the problems with holding a legislative session virtually, and the damage caused by the governor illegally transporting maggot-infested apples into Eastern Washington. Did Governor Jay Inslee’s 2019 slanderous comments about Boeing factor in the company’s decision to consolidate 787 Dreamliner assembly in the more business-friendly South Carolina?  To appeal to the anti-business sentiment among national liberal activists to bolster his failing presidential campaign in March of 2019, Governor Inslee selfishly decided to equate the state’s largest employer to “muggers” and “blackmailers” on national TV.  The move backfired.  Inslee failed to attract support for his campaign and Boeing announced it will move thousands of Washington State jobs to South Carolina.  Local Boeing workers will soon be unemployed, and many area businesses will be seriously hurt.  Those are consequences of Governor Inslee’s words.  Governor Zero has failed again to put Washingtonians ahead of his own political ambition. State

Governor Inslee ignores the concerns of local Democrat elected officials in continuing to attack Boeing for moving jobs to South Carolina.  At his Thursday “press conference/campaign event,” the governor responded to questions about Boeing’s decision by proclaiming “We cannot be a state that just takes orders from any corporation, any company.” This from a governor who consistently takes his orders from state employee unions on how to manage the state’s budget, who now plans to review Boeing’s tax breaks (and thus give the company additional incentives to move more jobs to more business-friendly locations).  Inslee’s pouting drew a strong rebuke from Snohomish County’s Democrat County Executive Dave Somers: “It’s time to look at how we strengthen that partnership and support each other through this. I do not see this as a time for division.” Washington State Senator John Braun (R – Centralia) labeled Inslee’s response as “frankly arrogant and certainly not helpful.” The Seattle Times noted (as Shift previously reported) that Inslee altered his views on Boeing’s tax responsibilities during his failed presidential campaign.  Similar to Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s demagoguery and legislative attacks driving Amazon jobs out of Seattle, Governor Inslee’s actions are driving Boeing jobs out of Washington State that even his fellow Democrats cry foul. A new study reveals that Washington State has the country’s fifth highest business closure rate during the coronavirus pandemic.   A report from Yelp reveals that, since March 1st, 4,975 Washington State businesses have closed, with 3,062 (62%) being “permanently closed.” It is interesting to note that two of the other members of Governor Inslee’s (Democrat only) Western States Pact (remember that?) are also among the top five in closures, with California at the 2nd worst rate and Nevada being #1. Controversial Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal released 20 pages of rules and guidelines for returning students back into the classroom, perhaps forgetting that school started over a month ago.  The document said it was developed by “The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, The Department of Health, The Department of Labor & Industries, Local School District Superintendents, and School Labor Representatives.”  As with Reykdal’s Reopening Washington Schools 2020 Workgroup, his office has failed to include two very important groups – parents and those involved in developing online learning curriculum and technology.  Thus, the former Democrat State Representative Reykdal continues his course of blindly following whatever the teachers union officials tell him, and not listening to students’ families and those involved in educational innovation. Seems like the same flawed process Reykdal took to cause the state to be woefully unprepared to educate our children when the pandemic hit. (Washington State’s Requirements for Schools Scenarios and OSPI’s Reopening Washington Schools 2020 Workgroup)

Former Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna said that the state’s liability laws make it difficult to bring back prep sports during the pandemic.  McKenna asserted that, “We’re in the most extreme position when it comes to the issue of the liability of taxpayers for personal injury claims filed against state government and local government.” McKenna continued, ““When you talk about COVID-19 and the potential liability for high school sports and for the school districts that run them, it’s a real concern.” (The Columbian)

Western Washington

Researchers from the University of Washington are driving around Seattle with a 360-degree camera, recording the physical impact the pandemic has had on the city.  While it may be easy to blame the coronavirus for most of the physical changes to the city, the real culprits behind the empty streets, boarded-up windows, closed businesses, homeless encampments, and barricades around police precincts are the extreme liberal social and criminal policies which rule the city. Oh, and drug needles, don’t forget those remnants of “progressive” governance. (MyNorthwest)

In more evidence that the Seattle School District has been (and is) more concerned about promoting political agendas than in educating children, it has been reported the district does not know how many students have the necessary equipment and internet service needed for remote learning.  After it was revealed last Spring that the district was unprepared to educate students outside of school buildings, companies like Amazon stepped up to donate thousands of laptops to the district.  Yet during the current school year, approximately 10% of the district’s students have not been engaging with online learning. (Seattle Times and Amazon)

Eastern Washington

The Walla Walla Union Bulletin stated its support for the federal government’s decision to not remove the Snake River dams and instead focus on alternatives (like increasing the amount of water spilled over the dams in the Spring) to increase the salmon population.  The paper described those who want to remove the dams as “driven by politics and ideology” and thus will continue in their quest.  As the paper points out, if the environmental activists are successful in the future in removing the clean energy that is generated by the dams, more environmental damage will occur. “Removing the dams would also increase the region’s carbon footprint as crops and goods now barged on the rivers would have to be moved by train and truck. This would mean more traffic and more fuel consumption.” (Walla Walla Union Bulletin)

Say What???

In the latest evidence that the folks at the Washington State Democrat Party are poorly informed about our state’s laws, in a fundraising email they mistakenly label controversial Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal as “Our Democrat incumbent.” The SPI has always been non-partisan in our state and even though Reykdal is funded by the same government employee unions and other liberal special interest groups that bankroll the Democrat party, he is officially “non-partisan.”  Yet we understand this distinction is difficult to understand by those who recently sent out repeated emails to complain about political rallies taking place in a non-existant “Cheval County.” (Washington State Democrat Party email)
