Governor Inslee refuses to help WA families now with a broad tax reduction or suspension and instead mentions a tax credit that will help a limited number of people sometime next year.
Newsmaker Interview
Shift’s Newsmaker Interview is with 30th Legislative District House candidate Ashli Tagoai, a Federal Way native, community activist, and promising young attorney. Republican strategists believe the 30thLegislative District (Federal Way, Algona, Pacific, and portions of Auburn and Des Moines) is where the GOP has a good opportunity to pick up both State House seats and the Senate seat as they attempt to win control of the Washington State Legislature. Tagoai is running for the House position currently held by Democrat Representative Jesse Johnson, who was one of the primary architects of the Democrats’ controversial anti-police package, which many law enforcement agencies blame for the sharp increase in crime in the state. Representative Johnson decided to not run for re-election and the two Democrats seeking the seat were described by The Stranger as having “sincere support for progressive policies.”
In her interview, Tagoai provides her thoughts on the Democrats’ disastrous crime bill, the already insolvent Long-Term Care program, providing tax relief to Washington’s working families, what the legislature can do to prevent domestic abuse, and whether Seattle’s “progressive policies” represent the priorities of South King County. Togoai also selects a classic book as her favorite because it provides young attorneys with an important lesson. (Click to read full Newsmaker Interview)

Once again Governor Jay Inslee has used a national media appearance to make reckless and irresponsible statements in his usual quest to attract more attention for himself. In an appearance on the Washington Post’s video blog, the governor made outlandish comments regarding recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, as he sought to stand out among all the other irresponsible and inaccurate comments made by Democrat electeds and liberal activists. The governor’s comments are what one would expect from a drunk college student on social media and not from someone who wishes to portray themselves as a statesman. Sadly this is nothing new for Governor Inslee, as he has desperately sought recognition from national Democrat activists who have repeatedly shunned him in the past. In 2019, the governor likely cost the state thousands of high-paying manufacturing jobs when he went on national TV and called Boeing “muggers” and “blackmailers” as he sought support from the Democrats’ anti-business activists for his short-lived presidential campaign. Republican Senate Leader John Braun was critical of Governor Inslee for stating that the only tax relief he will support is one that won’t occur until mid-2023 and only assists a limited number of people. The governor has repeatedly ignored the needs of millions of Washington residents by refusing to join Republican lawmakers who seek to use the state’s massive tax surpluses to provide broad tax relief (on gas and/or sales) to help lower- and middle- income families who are struggling financially due to rapid inflation and skyrocketing fuel prices. The governor instead says he only supports the low-income tax credit which does not provide any help to families for at least a year, has strict limits on who it helps, and requires individuals to fill out confusing application forms.
Senator Braun said, “The governor and his people keep pointing to the Working Families Tax Credit because they have nothing else. It’s like a pony that knows only one trick, so that’s all you’re going to get, even if everyone knows the tax credit won’t do a thing to help people now.”
The governor and his team are well aware that the low-income tax credit will not provide the same needed relief as Republican proposals to reduce or temporarily suspend the state’s 49.4-cents-per- gallon gas tax (the third highest in the country) or reduce the state’s sales tax. Reporters have repeatedly asked the governor’s director of communications how a tax credit that goes into effect next year helps Washington State residents today. Thus far reporters have not received an answer. Reporters have also asked the governor’s press secretary how the tax credit could help motorists today and he responded by stating, “None of the governor’s recent comments in interviews need clarification.”
We should note that the tax credit was passed by the legislature prior to Governor Inslee coming into office a decade ago. Yet the governor and his fellow Democrats never made it a priority to fund the program, thus next year is when it will finally go into effect. (CenterSquare)
Republican legislative leaders continue the call for further actions, including impeachment, against embattled Democrat Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, while nearly all Democrats have refused to discuss the controversy after sending out press releases calling for his resignation a few weeks ago. The liberal 78-year old career politician was initially condemned last February after reports surfaced about him mistreating staff members and repeatedly using inappropriate language. Yet calls for his resignation only came from both parties a few weeks ago when it was revealed that Commissioner Kreidler had fired one of the “whistleblowers” who had previously made public some of the commissioner’s disturbing actions.
House Republican Leader JT Wilcox has often mentioned impeachment and Senate Republican Leader John Braun stated that the House is required first to act on impeachment, but if they do, he will certainly bring it up in the Senate. Numerous Democrat legislative leaders refused to comment on whether or not they would support impeachment against the six-term insurance commissioner. (CenterSquare)

Two 17-year old suspects were arrested and charged with the murder of a 14-year-old girl who was shot in the Tacoma Hilltop neighborhood while she was in a car full of youths on Wednesday morning. Community leaders, who had been marching and rallying to end the violence in the neighborhood, were still gathered and cheered when news of the arrests was made on Thursday evening. Like most cities in Washington, violent crime continues to increase in Tacoma since the passage of the Democrats’ 2021 anti-police package in the Washington State Legislature. This was the 27th murder in Tacoma thus far in 2022. This time last year there weree just 11 murders. (The News Tribune)
Are you looking to have some outdoor fun and help two great Republican legislative candidates seeking to re-take seats currently controlled by the Democrats? The Bill Boyce for Senate and Carmen Goers for Representative campaigns are looking for volunteers to march in parades with them this Sunday (July 10th) and the following Saturday (July 16th). Both candidates are in the 47th Legislative District (South King County). The head of the Washington State Farm Bureau stated it was important for farmers across the state to be united to fight off attempts by Seattle liberals who are seeking to harm agriculture in our state. President Rosella Moseby said, “We have to remember there’s this bigger critic out there that would love to see agriculture fail… We got to work together to make sure that we’re meeting the needs of our industry and of the farmers in Washington and that’s advocating for ourselves, that’s standing up for ourselves, that’s making sure that our needs in order to provide food for our communities, and that work gets done.” Moseby stated that what is currently taking place in Olympia is similar to what is occurring in Sacramento, where there are liberal policy makers seeking to end farming they don’t like in California. The Northwest RiverPartners is seeking members of the public to make comments on the unscientific and expensive Democrat plan developed by Governor Inslee and U.S. Senator Patty Murray to tear down the four lower Snake River dams. The draft of the plan was released a couple of weeks ago and next Monday (July 11th) is the end of an extremely short public comment period (proving the only opinion on the dams the Democrats are valuing are those expressed by wealthy urban environmentalists who provide large contributions to their campaigns). Click on the link to learn more and how you can submit your thoughts on the future of the Snake River dams and the clean, carbon-free energy they provide.
