TAXES JUST KEEP ADDING UP FOR WASHINGTON BUSINESSES
STATE INCOME TAX JUST MAKES THE STATE EVEN LESS COMPETITIVE
We probably didn’t need another reminder about how the Inslee administration continues to add costs to the privilege of living under his one-party rule in Washington, yet the Tax Foundation wouldn’t be doing its job if it ignored the job being done to us. That’s how Center Square was able to find our state sliding in the Foundation’s rankings from 15th to “35th in their 2024 State Business Tax Climate Index.”
The new state income tax (approved by the State Supreme Court as Shift highlighted) is one feature dragging our ranking lower, but our state “is the only one that applies gross receipts taxes to S corporations and limited liability companies,” among other over-reaching regulatory grabs. You can read more about why the state’s appetite for your money is not really good for business here… Center Square, Shift.
THIS WEEK'S NEWSMAKER INTERVIEW...
This week’s interview is with Dr. Raul Garcia, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate who escaped the communist Cuban regime at the age of 11, built a successful medical career, and now resides in Yakima with his family. In the interview, Dr. Garcia discussed his political influences, concerns about Senator Maria Cantwell’s absenteeism in much of the state, and his views on issues such as the Israel-Hamas war, rising crime rates, healthcare, and college debt, while also sharing his favorite novel and admiration for President Abraham Lincoln. LOOKS LIKE STATE SEN. MANKA DHINGRA’S ANTI-POLICE AGENDA FOR NEXT SESSION
Fringe groups on the Left never stop in their ongoing attempt to weaken the ability of police departments across the state to enforce the law, as demonstrated by one of State Senator Manka Dhingra’s favorite anti-police groups rolling out its legislative agenda well in advance of next year’s session. And according to KOMO, you can see how this agenda builds on Sen. Dhingra’s staunch opposition to allowing police to pursue car thieves.
Additionally, you can see that this group just basically wants to keep police away from people in general, as a “second priority is to end unnecessary traffic stops. The coalition wants to prevent officers from pulling people over for equipment failures or expired tabs” because that could lead to enforcing the law. You can see why that’s bad, in the liberal view, here… KOMO.
DEMOCRATS CAN’T ALLOW PRIVATE INDUSTRY VOLUNTARILY REPLACING TAX DOLLARS
You often hear liberals complaining about how government doesn’t have enough different revenue streams to pay for all the things that people want (or that politicians want to give people). For those who make that complaint, Shift leaves you with this story from the Seattle Times about people whining about the state ferry system generating money from the private industry by wrapping “the bow and stern of the ferry Tacoma with the hemoglobin-hued banners pitching passengers on a trip to the vending machine,” advertising which gives the ferry system money for a better passenger experience.
The Inslee administration approach is to bow to the whiners and close off the revenue stream, with no “plans to do that sort of advertising again until we can have a more robust conversation about what’s appropriate.” Maybe a person who doesn’t like the ads could just close their eyes while on a very much taxpayer-subsidized boat ride, hmmm?… Seattle Times.
WHY WILL THE ONE AGRICULTURE VOICE ON INSLEE’S ENERGY PANEL SKIP A KEY VOTE?
Shift has long been following the controversial and massive green energy project being pushed by Seattle environmentalists where they can’t see it outside the Tri-Cities. The latest troubling development is the news from the Capital Press that “Washington state agriculture director Derek Sandison has excused himself from a council considering whether to allow the Horse Heaven wind and solar project to be built on farmland in Benton County.” Read on to find out if it makes sense that the one person who sort of gets paid to care about agriculture won’t weigh in on a project that will cause so much damage to agricultural land here… Shift, Capital Press.
WHY IS THE LEFT AFTER MOMS THIS ELECTION SEASON?
Campaigns are winding down, with ballots already being returned across the state. If you still have yours, you might want to consider why Fuse, the Seattle voice claiming to be the state’s loudest “progressive” one, doesn’t like moms. Or, at least, if you take a look at their latest email screed, why they generically hate any that they can call MAGA or call themselves Moms for Liberty here… Fuse email.
JAY INSLEE IS RAISING ENERGY PRICES - IN WYOMING
Just remember, if you hear Governor Jay Inslee or one of his Democrat legislative apologists claiming that their cap and trade/carbon tax doesn’t raise energy prices, tell them that story won’t even work in Wyoming. We know that because folks at Cowboy State Daily reported on an electricity rate case raising the question of “whether a carbon tax that’s been placed on the Chehalis facility in Washington is being unfairly shouldered by people in Wyoming.”
You can read on for more (intended) unintended consequences of the Democrats creating a tax that reaches as many people receiving no benefits as possible here… Cowboy State Daily.
FRIDAY GOOD NEWS – EVERYONE CAN HAVE AN APPLE A DAY
Let the team at Shift head out for the weekend with this good news – crop conditions mean everybody can find their favorite apple this year, as unlike last when “poor weather conditions damaged a significant portion of the 2022 apple crop, apple growers in Washington expect to return to normalcy in 2023,” according to Tree Fruit Association and Crosscut.
