If you want to know where sleazy California billionaire Tom Steyer gets his attack campaign tactics from, look no further than his political consultant, Chris Lehane. The NY Times does a deep dive on Lehane, a former Clinton-Gore operative, in this Sunday’s magazine.
Lehane is very proud of what he calls his “operating principle”: don’t worry about facts when you face opposition, just “punch them in the mouth.”
Washington voters can unfortunately expect to see more of Tom Steyer’s attack-all-the-time campaign tactics this year, as he recently announced to plans to spend at least $100 million this year on campaigns and candidates that support his extreme environmental agenda. Perhaps the only thing that might slow Steyer down is if our state’s Public Disclosure Commission resumes its investigations into his shady financial dealings in last year’s state senate race in the 26th district.
As for Lehane, here’s another reason for Washingtonians to wish he would keep Steyer’s millions focused on California politics – he ran the campaign to keep the NBA’s Sacramento Kings in California, rather than move them to Seattle.
