Daily Briefing – September 14, 2021

A sad farewell to one of Shift’s favorite comedians – Norm MacDonald. He was never afraid to stand up to today’s liberal cancel culture and those against free speech.

Q13’s Brandi Kruse posted an interesting video that starts with Governor Jay Inslee bragging that he had just “won the Super Bowl” against COVID (said during his very premature victory lap around Washington in early July). The video then showed the governor’s recent announcements of more restrictions on Washington State residents due to the latest surge in cases.  While most local media members do not point out the many failures of our current governor, Brandi Kruse remains one of the last true journalists the region’s liberal establishment does not control. Some fire departments in smaller communities are nervous about losing long-term volunteers due to Governor Inslee’s vaccine mandates.  Smaller departments are often dependent on the assistance of volunteers, and these positions are covered by Governor Inslee’s requirement to be vaccinated against COVID or face termination. One Lewis County fire chief said he heard that 50% of some volunteer departments refuse to go along with the governor’s mandate. This could seriously impact fire protection in rural communities, and it is providing stress for many fire commissions. The fire chief said commissions would “have to come up with something, because we could potentially lose half our department.” (Centralia Chronicle)

Republican lawmakers will release a new report titled “Prison Alarm Bells,” which examines if any progress has been made within Governor Jay Inslee’s dysfunctional Department of Corrections since the legislature created a series of suggestions for necessary improvements in 2016Republican Senators Mike Padden (Spokane Valley), Keith Wagoner (Sedro Woolley), and Chris Gildon (Puyallup) will be releasing the report tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10:00 AM (which can be viewed live via TVW).  Five years ago, the Washington State Senate’s Law and Justice Committee made a series of recommendations to fix the poorly managed DOC after several scandals, including the early release of 3,700 prisoners, rocked the department.  Since then, the DOC has continued to be in the spotlight, primarily due to at least seven deaths of prisoners who failed to receive the medical care they needed.  (Reminder, more deaths have occurred due to alleged medical negligence under Governor Inslee than if he had not placed a moratorium on all death penalties.) The League of Our Own organization is off to a great start with 26 of their 28 moderate/conservative women candidates moving onto the 2021 general election ballot. It is looking to add staff as they continue to move forward.  In March, Shift WA interviewed Executive Director Kaitlin Vintertun to learn more about the organization, which seeks to help “talented women who believe in limited government, fiscal responsibility, and personal accountability” win elections.  In its inaugural year, League of Our Own has had great success assisting candidates running for school boards, city councils, and other critical local positions. To continue to build on its success, Kaitlin has informed us that she is hiring another staffer to work with the candidates, a large number of volunteer coaches, and the group’s growing network of supporters. The Seattle City Council once again showed it is more committed to the irresponsible political desires of violent liberal rioters than to the public safety of its 750,000 residents when councilmembers repeatedly voted down proposals to provide funds to retain police officers.  Despite a mass exodus of well-trained officers within the city’s police department and a sharp increase in violent crimes against Seattle residents, the out-of-touch city council felt beholden to the desires of violent rioters and their still undefined “community based” public safety programs (i.e., extortion to liberal special interest groups). The council shot down several funding proposals supported by lame-duck Mayor Jenny Durkan that would have provided funds to provide bonuses to current officers and new recruits.  (KIRO-TV)

There will be an informal public rally this Friday at the Renton City Hall starting at noon to show support for law enforcement after two recent incidents where police officers were the targets of random attempts on their lives.  The most recent attack occurred last Tuesday afternoon in downtown Renton when an assailant shot 15 rounds into a police car attempting to murder an officer at a stoplight (fortunately, no one was hurt).

Sadly these attacks are somewhat predictable given the complete silence by Democrat officials after the repeated physical assaults on law enforcement conducted by liberal protestors last summer in Seattle. Despite an attempted mass murder of police personnel at Seattle’s East Precinct and many other physical attacks, not one Democrat leader stood up for law enforcement and denounced the attacks. Governor Inslee embarrassingly went so far as to pretend he had never heard about the ongoing riots that were all over national news instead of standing up for police officers. While Shift typically sticks to stories relating to Washington State or local politics, we thought many of our readers would be interested in the breaking national news story regarding the poor treatment of workers and “dysfunctional working conditions” within “Progressive Champion” Congresswoman Pamelia Jayapal’s office.  Buzzfeed interviewed over a dozen current and former staffers who equated working for Representative Jayapal to being held hostage and working under “Stockholm syndrome conditions.” Jayapal’s current Chief of Staff, Lilah Pomerance, blamed the multiple allegations on racism and sexism stating, “Women of color are often unjustly targeted, regularly held to higher standards than their male colleagues, and always put under a sexist microscope.” Which lead to the questions: why are there so many racists and sexists willing to work for Progressive lawmakers, and why does Representative Jayapal keep hiring them?  Sadly, we know that Pomerance’s frivolous defense is full of holes, and she has further diluted the arguments of those who are truly victims of sexist and racist actions. Jeff Bezos and Amazon will continue to earn more profits as the Seattle City Council opted to keep the $4 an hour “hazard pay” in place for grocery workers indefinitely.  The pay increase has forced Seattle grocery stores to increase the cost of items on their shelves. In contrast, Bezos’ Amazon Fresh grocery delivery business continues to grow market share due to not being subject to the grocery store wage mandate and thus can offer lower prices. Councilmembers said that, eventually, they would vote again on whether to remove the hazard pay requirement.  Yet, it is easy to imagine that many grocery store workers will have adapted to higher living standards after increasing pay for approximately a year. Many will have difficulties adjusting once the payment drops. (MyNorthwest)

The state’s highest-paid employee, Washington State University Football Coach Mike Rolovich, refuses to answer questions regarding his vaccination status and whether he plans to be fully vaccinated by Governor Inslee’s deadline of October 18th. The coach, who previously stated he would not receive the COVID vaccine for personal reasons, refused to answer questions at his weekly Monday news conference. This was the first media availability for Coach Rolovich since the governor declared that all state employees, contractors, and volunteers who are not vaccinated would be terminated. The coach will earn $3.2 million this year.  (KREM2)
