The power of Washington State labor unions is as strong as ever. In a new report on union influence in the 2014 Legislature, the Freedom Foundation found that three out of the top five largest lobbying spenders in our state were labor unions. The highest spending union was—surprise, surprise—our state’s very powerful teachers’ union, the Washington Education Association (WEA). Two of the top three highest paid lobbyists also all happened to be—surprise, surprise—from the WEA.
One thing that makes a little more sense:
The fact that state Senate Democrats suddenly decided—after meeting with WEA lobbyists—they would no longer support a bill they introduced/endorsed that would have protected our state’s No Child Left Behind waiver. As a result of Democrats’ incompetence, Washington State lost control of $40 million for at-risk children.
