What are the results from spending millions in taxpayer money after declaring homelessness an “emergency” seven years ago? More homelessness and a much bigger government bureaucracy.

The Lynnwood Times continues to do excellent reporting on 10th Legislative District Democrat candidate Clyde Shavers’ multiple lies and the failure of liberal elected officials and Democrat organizations to withdraw their endorsements and support of his disgraced State House campaign. After Shift broke the news of Shavers’ father writing a letter outlining many of the false statements his son and his campaign have made about the younger Shavers’ military and employment record, family history, and where he lives, the Lynnwood Times’ reporter Kienan Briscoe contacted those who could confirm who was telling the truth. In each instance, the reporter found that Shavers’ father was truthful, and the candidate’s statements were false.
The Lynnwood Times obtained Shavers’ military record on Wednesday, which proved the Democrat candidate never served as a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine officer as he often claimed in his campaign materials. While Shavers participated in a training program for working on a nuclear submarine, he never completed the training, nor actually served on a submarine.
The Lynnwood Times then attempted to contact the 16 liberal/Democrat elected officials who have endorsed Shavers in his race against Republican Representative Greg Gilday. Not surprisingly 14 of the elected officials (including two Democrat legislators – Senator Liz Lovelett from the 40th LD and Representative Emily Wicks from the 38th LD) refused to respond to the reporter’s inquiry. Island County Commissioner Melanie Bacon did respond and said despite the overwhelming evidence that Shavers has repeatedly lied to voters, she was not going to withdraw her endorsement. Commissioner Bacon stated “I like both Clyde and Greg, personally. But Clyde is pro-choice, and Greg is not. I stand by my endorsement of Clyde Shavers.” Which begs the question, how many lies must a candidate tell voters before a liberal official will finally consider the candidate’s lack of honesty more important than the abortion issue?
This story has now made national news. This morning the FOX News’ website included the story of Shavers’ father writing the letter detailing the many falsehoods his son has made. Also, the Washington State Republican Party has made a 30-second video to help inform 10th LD voters that “Clyde Lied.” (Lynnwood Times, Shift, FOX News, and Washington State Republican Party)
Governor Jay Inslee emailed a statement this morning regarding the mental health of Washington State students (along with a significant drop in test scores) and the need to “invest” in more teachers and “more assistants, nurses, counselors, and psychiatrists to better support wellness in addition to education,” without ever mentioning that it was his policies to keep students isolated which caused many students to develop mental health problems. As we have seen repeatedly here in Washington State, after liberal policies on homelessness, drugs, crime, housing, etc., have made problems worse, the same liberal politicians who supported the failed policies demand higher taxes so they can afford to “invest” in making government larger which they claim will solve the problem.
During the pandemic, the governor used his emergency powers to keep students away, for far too long, from in-person learning and being able to socialize with other students. He did this while ignoring the pleas of parents, administrators, Republican officials, local officials, and children mental health experts to allow the students to safely return (at least part-time) to the classroom as they had done in many other states. Now that numerous studies have found that these appeals which the governor ignored were actually correct and that serious mental health issues have increased among our students, liberal politicians will again demand that taxes will need to be raised because they contend that only a bigger government can solve the problems their policies made worse. Gas prices in Washington State continue to be higher than previous years and well-above the national average — and this is before gas prices are expected to jump even higher in early 2023 thanks to Democrat energy policies. According to AAA, Washington’s average gas price is $4.89 cents a gallon, which is a dollar more than prices were a year ago, when gas averaged $3.87 cents a gallon. Primarily due to having the 3rd-highest state gas tax (49.4 cents a gallon), Washington continues to have higher gas prices than the rest of the country, as the national AAA determined is $3.76 a gallon – or even lower than our state’s gas prices a year ago. When Governor Inslee’s “Cap and Trade” program goes into effect in 2023 – thanks to Democrat legislators jamming it through – independent studies have found it will increase our state’s gas prices by 46 cents a gallon (and will continue to drive it higher in subsequent years). Yesterday marked seven years since then-Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and Democrat King County Executive Dow Constantine declared homelessness an emergency and committed to spending millions more of taxpayer money on fixing the problem — yet everyone agrees the conditions are far worse today. The Executive Director of Mary’s Place, a non-profit which helps homeless individuals develop skills to become independent, said her group had 200 shelter beds seven years ago, today they have 720, and that is not enough.
KOMO News asked both the City of Seattle and King County for a breakdown for how the money was spent on homeless issues, and neither government was able to produce the information. When asked what progress has been made to help the homeless since 2015, the only achievement government officials mentioned was the creation of yet another large bureaucracy, the King County Regional Homeless Authority (whose CEO is making $250,000 a year and is already stating that the new agency needs a far greater budget). Thus, in the seven years since liberal officials declared a homeless emergency and after hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars have been spent, there are far more homeless individuals living desperate lives on the street and government officials can’t provide a clue where all the money has been spent, while government has rapidly increased its size and cost to taxpayers. This is the epitome of a liberal utopia. (KOMO News)
Another murder occurred in West Seattle last night as the city’s murder rate is on course to break previous records. This homicide occurred just a couple of days after two people were seriously injured by an apparent random shooting on nearby Alki Beach. According to the Seattle Police Department’s Crime Dashboard, Wednesday night’s murder brings the city’s total to 42 for the year, which already equals the number of homicides for all of 2021, and is on pace to top the 53 which occurred in 2020. No arrests have been made yet in either crime. (MyNorthwest, KING5 News, and SPD’s Crime Dashboard)
Lewis County law enforcement was busy making drug-related arrests on Wednesday in two seemingly unrelated crimes. Following the fentanyl overdose of a 26-year-old Centralia man, four people were arrested and charged for controlled-substance homicide and possession of fentanyl with the intent to deliver. A 26-year-old Mexican national was also arrested following a traffic stop on I-5 after officers found 100 pounds of methamphetamine, 19.8 pounds of suspected fentanyl mixed with cocaine powder, and about 340,000 fentanyl pills. Police departments across the state have been pleading with legislators to fix the Democrat’s 2021 legislation (SB 5476) which decriminalized possession of such lethal drugs as fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin. Police say this has led to more people using the drugs and has led to more criminal activity. (Centralia Chronicle, KUOW, and Washington Legislature Bill Summary)

A Spokane senior expresses the frustration many are having around the state after Democrat legislators passed anti-police laws which made it more comfortable to be a criminal in Washington. Renee Rader was a recent victim of property crime, and she wants sentencing laws changed so that “it is more than just a slap on the wrist for someone to come into somebody’s yard illegally.” Regarding criminals actions, Rader said, “It’s just more brazen. They come into your yard,” she added. “They don’t just, ‘if it’s close to your fence grab it,’ they come into your yard, onto your porch, onto your property.”
A Spokane Police Department spokesman agreed with Ms. Rader, “People committing these criminal acts are more emboldened or more brazen, and we see that in a number of criminal categories.” Police resources are not able to keep up with the increase in criminal activity and police state that citizens need to increase their own expenses to put in more lighting, motion detectors, and security systems.
