It looks like California billionaire Tom Steyer will have to reach further into his own deep pockets if he is to keep his promise to spend $100 million dollars attacking Republicans this year, according to an Associated Press report.
Steyer’s big money SuperPAC NextGen Climate Action Committee – which spent over $500,000 in Washington State last year in a failed effort to defeat State Senator Jan Angel– received $50 million from Steyer in May, but has raised “only $1.2 million” from other donors since then.
Perhaps Steyer’s recent string of bad news about his hypocrisy in attacking energy projects he wasn’t money making on – or the truth about his past investment strategy– are keeping donors from wanting to be aligned with him.
While we might hope that would mean less of Steyer’s attack ads on TV, remember the billionaire’s minions have said his donation of “$50 million is the floor, not the ceiling, of what he might donate himself.”
Whatever it takes to keep him in the news, evidently.
