GOP State Sen. John Braun vows that Senate Republicans will continue fighting for affordability, public safety, and parental rights in Olympia, even as Washington resists a national shift toward the right.
Washington’s Path Forward: Braun Calls for Policies that Reflect Voters’ Needs Despite Election Challenges
As GOP State Sen. John Braun points out in his latest op-ed, a conservative shift has taken place across the U.S., but Washington state has – unfortunately – resisted this trend. Despite the Republicans’ efforts to field strong candidates advocating for family and taxpayer-friendly policies, Democrats maintained control by using cynical and misleading tactics. These tactics, backed by significant funding and assisted by the governor’s administration, swayed voter opinion against conservative initiatives aimed at affordability.
While most Republican-backed ballot initiatives failed due to well-funded opposition campaigns, Initiative 2066, which seeks to repeal a law allowing a natural-gas ban, appears to have passed. In his op-ed, Braun rightfully criticizes the media for not adequately fact-checking claims, especially when misinformation targeted initiatives like I-2109 and I-2117, which he states were falsely portrayed as harmful to education and infrastructure funding. Braun also highlights Democrats’ potential intent to repeal certain Republican-led initiatives, such as those supporting police pursuits, parental rights, and the income-tax ban, despite bipartisan initial approval.
Despite the losses, there were a few bright spots. In his piece, Braun celebrates the Republican wins in the Yakima Valley, where Sen. Curtis King was re-elected despite district gerrymandering, and Republicans captured two House seats. These results amount to a rejection of assumptions about Hispanic voting patterns and a broader trend toward Hispanic support for Republicans.
Reflecting on the overall election outcomes, Braun ends by emphasizes that effective policy wins over empty symbolism. He reaffirms the commitment of Washington Senate Republicans to improve public safety, affordability, and children’s well-being in the 2025 session, even from a minority position. Afterall, these goals align with the desires of Washington’s citizens and are the key to making the state better for everyone. Read more at The Chronicle.
WA Cares Lives On, Thanks to Confusing Ballots and Big Union Bucks
The re-election of WA Cares may have hinged more on ballot confusion than true support. Many voters found the measure’s wording—crafted by the attorney general’s office—to be misleading, casting doubt on what “yes” or “no” even meant. Previous advisory votes showed voters were already against mandatory long-term care deductions, with many opting out. Still, thanks to the convoluted ballot language and SEIU 775’s substantial campaign spending, the initiative to make WA Cares optional faced an uphill battle. UW professor Christopher Adolph argued the language was intentionally unclear, pushing confused voters toward a default “no.” Meanwhile, SEIU 775, the state’s top election-cycle donor, heavily promoted keeping WA Cares mandatory, benefiting from the program’s payroll tax. In the end, WA Cares remains mandatory, with workers—especially those who may never qualify—still footing the bill. As the Washington Policy Center’s Jason Mercier points out, the confusing ballot language and lack of exit polling on voter understanding highlight a need for reform in how Washington’s ballot measures are presented. Jayapal’s Reality Check: When Common Sense Meets Progressive Denial
Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal is up to her usual tricks, defending the very far-left agenda on transgender athletes in youth sports despite clear public disapproval. While Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Seth Moulton dared to suggest his party has lost touch with everyday Americans on this issue, Jayapal, in typical form, brushed him off with a quick dose of manufactured outrage, framing any dissent as a Republican “culture war.”
As KTTH’s Jason Rantz argues there’s nothing offensive in Moulton’s concern about fairness for his daughters, yet Jayapal’s stance shows just how deep Democrats are willing to dig to defend policies dismissing concerns for women’s safety and fair play. don’t want a discussion; they want everyone to accept the party line, even if it means erasing the idea of “female” altogether.
With polls showing increasing opposition to trans athletes in women’s sports, as Rantz points out, it’s Democrats, not Republicans, fueling a culture war by bulldozing public opinion and branding any dissent as bigotry. The real gaslighting is coming from leaders like Jayapal, who ignore the majority’s concerns while forcing extremist gender policies on youth, sports, and society as a whole. Read more at KTTH.
Washington’s Public Schools Gear Up for Another Term of ‘Progress’ Parents Didn’t Ask For
With Chris Reykdal’s re-election as Washington’s superintendent of public instruction, Washingtonians can expect a continuation of his leftist education policies. Despite David Olson’s strong showing with nearly 46% of the vote, largely from rural areas, he fell short due to concentrated support for Reykdal in King County. Olson rightfully criticized this imbalance, expressing concern that one region’s preferences dictate statewide policies, affecting school enrollments as families seek alternatives like homeschooling or private schools.
Reykdal’s record includes controversial decisions, such as advising districts to disregard Initiative 2081, which would expand parental access to student records and classroom materials. He often oversteps his authority and puts federal guidelines ahead of state law. Reykdal’s approach to Title IX changes under the Biden administration, which extend protections for LGBTQ+ students, further stokes the fire, especially as many states resist these federal rules. Ultimately, Washington families must brace themselves for a continuation of Reykdal’s policies that alienate parents and lack transparency. Read more at Center Square.
