JUDGE RULES BAN ON HIGH-CAPACITY MAGAZINES IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL – STATE SUPREMES IMMEDIATELY ORDERS IT BACK ON THE BOOKS
Earlier this evening, a Cowlitz County Superior Court judge ruled the state’s ban on high-capacity magazines is unconstitutional. Just minutes after his ruling, Bob Ferguson filed an emergency appeal with the state Supreme Court, which issued an order keeping the law in place pending the appeal. Ferguson immediately Tweeted that the law “is constitutional” and went on to attack Dave Reichert over gun control. Glad Bob cleared it up for everyone so quickly…KING 5, Twitter
INVESTIGATION SHOWS L&I FAILS TO RECOVER STOLEN WAGES FROM EMPLOYERS THROUGH ITS COLLECTION PROCESS
A Seattle Times watchdog investigation has uncovered that Washington State’s Labor & Industries department hasn’t collected more than $5.4 million owed to wage theft victims. The investigation detailed that the department tasked with ensuring the security of workers has a terrible record of doing so – to the tune of $0 recovered in December 2023. But never fear, the legislature directed the agency to explore how it can do better with a report due 20 months from now. That should be comforting to the workers waiting on thousands of dollars each in earned wages…Seattle Times

Despite having a fraction of claims experienced during COVID, they are still having the same problems they had with their system during the pandemic. What does the agency blame its persistent issues on? You guessed it…COVID and ironically, staffing issues. THURSTON COUNTY SHERIFF FACES BACKLASH AFTER HIRING ACQUITTED FORMER TACOMA COP
Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders is facing backlash for hiring Christopher Burbank, one of the former Tacoma cops recently acquitted in the murder trial of Manny Ellis. Burbank resigned just two days after his hiring was publicly announced by the office. We at Shift understand that this hire was going to prompt some strong emotions, but if someone who is acquitted by a jury of their peers can’t be allowed to move on with their life and career, it says a lot about where we are as a society…The Center Square
