Happening in Olympia

Democrats in Washington failed students and families yesterday when their members in the Washington State House voted against lowering taxes in their districts. For perspective: State Rep. Pat Sullivan (D-47) voted against an average of $300 in savings for the typical Auburn homeowner and $330 for the typical homeowner in Kent. Representatives Mike Pellicciotti (D-30) and Kristine Reeves (D-30) cost Federal Way families an average of $350 a year in savings.

A $7 billion (actually, $11 billion) proposal without a plan to fund itself was passed in the Washington State House Wednesday. Coming in at 50-47, Democrats managed to strong-arm their bill through the House and will now have to wait and see how the Senate responds to their proposal.

Bob Ferguson’s priorities died from what turned out to be a critical combination of neglect and ambition.

Education

It’s time to move forward with education, and Seattle Times’ editorial board agrees with us for once: “Now that a King County Superior Court judge has ruled that Washington’s charter-schools law is constitutional, the detractors of this promising education approach should stand down.” Will the teacher unions finally stop trying to “thwart the will of voters” who approved charter laws and get to work on education reform? Only time will tell – but we will be here to keep you informed.

Labor Unions

“An otherwise routine… criticism led to me uncovering a labor union front group hiding in plain sight,” KIRO Radio Host Jason Rantz recently reported. Working Washington is being revealed as a front group for a labor union – complete with a board of directors that are almost all SEIU officials, a staff of former employees, a list of donations from labor unions or affiliates and more.

Note: SHIFT has been covering groups like this since our inception. We exposed the liberal attack network and showed how they are all funded, in part or whole, by the Progress Alliance and work together in coordinated attacks.

Western Washington

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray (D) targets soda with a $16 million tax to support education funding for communities of color. If anyone is keeping track, Murray lacks faith in a soda tax as a reliable revenue stream. However, when you’re on the cusp re-election, you do whatever makes you look good. In this case, it’s taxing the very communities you’re claiming to help.

Wondering exactly why your car tabs have tripled? There is a formula that breaks down the number for you, but knowing the justification for higher taxes hasn’t alleviated any of the regret from voters who still feel they “were duped.”

Eastern Washington

A 2015 lawsuit filed by Katherine J. Bolton against the U.S. Attorney’s office in Spokane was settled yesterday for $225,000. The allegation that women were not treated equally in the office was settled by the U.S. Department of Justice. Bolton’s lawyer claims this as one of the largest gender discrimination settlements by the DOJ.

Immigration Watch

Jay Inslee will sign an executive order today regarding immigration. We’ll know the details soon.

Out of Left Field

Democrats are finally recognizing, “our party is in an unprecedented crisis,” according to DNC Chair Candidate Ray Buckley. Check out the RNC’s latest advertisement to get your morning entertainment as it highlights admissions Democratic leaders that show the party is a mess. Our favorite? “We like to think of ourselves as the smart ones, but the reality is, we’ve been outclassed.” You’re absolutely correct, Peter Buttigieg.
