Happening in Olympia
Washington State’s Supreme Court has voted to uphold Seattle’s gun and ammunition sales tax. The court ruled 8-1 affirming the tax – which is a $25 fee per firearm and a 2 to 5 cent tax for every round of ammunition bought in the liberal city.
Western Washington
Drug-related deaths were at a record high last year, with two-thirds of the 332 deaths coming from opioid-related overdoses.
Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brien’s legislation would, “spread dozens of homeless RV lots across the city.” The legislation has yet to be introduced, but it would allow some vehicles that are used for housing to be exempt from impound laws on the streets. (Read more here)
The City of Kirkland spent almost three quarters of a million dollars to pick up trash last year. This year the city is asking people who visit parks to pitch into the effort so the burden does not just fall on parks maintenance workers.
Seattle’s Swedish Health facility on Cherry Hill may be eliminated from the Medicare program after investigations revealed problems at the facility relating to oversight and patient safety. They have 90 days to fall into compliance.
Eastern Washington
742 gallons of oil leaked into the Snake River over the course of the last seven months from a hydroelectric generator unit, which has now been shut down. The leak happened at the primary generator in the Lower Monumental Dam.
Forbes named Wenatchee as one of the 25 best places to retire, calling it a “scenic, sunny Columbia River city of 33,000.”
