The Daily Briefing – December 19, 2024

Bob Ferguson seems to care less about fixing a $14 billion deficit and more about suing the incoming Trump Admin over hypotheticals.

Bob’s Battle Plan: Trump First, Washington Later

Bob Ferguson’s priorities are already raising eyebrows as he prepares to step into the Governor’s office. In a recent interview with KING 5 News, he seemed more preoccupied with preparing to battle a hypothetical Trump administration than tackling Washington’s mounting crises. Instead of addressing the state’s $14 billion deficit, a broken education system, or rising taxes, Ferguson is brushing up on constitutional law to counter policies Trump might pursue. Apparently, fixing Washington is secondary to his ongoing feud with the former president.

During the interview, Ferguson spent an unusual amount of time outlining how he’s preparing to challenge Trump’s “Project 2025” and potential National Guard policies. Meanwhile, Washington classrooms are underfunded, special education needs are rising, and the state’s mental health crisis grows more severe by the day. But Ferguson’s focus? How to sue Trump over executive authority. It’s as if he forgot he’s about to be governor of a state and not a full-time Trump antagonist.

When asked about the budget crisis, Ferguson gave vague platitudes about being “lean and efficient” but avoided committing to any actual solutions. Instead, he pointed out that he once sided with Republicans years ago to shrink King County’s council—a claim that feels like a weak attempt to score fiscal conservative points while his party openly floats new taxes like a wealth tax and property tax hikes.

And don’t forget his glowing segment about his personal collection of political memorabilia, which somehow took center stage in the same interview. From JFK doodles to Wing Luke’s old book, Ferguson eagerly described his treasures, even hinting at plans for an exhibit in the Governor’s Mansion. Great—because what Washington needs right now is a museum tour, not real solutions.

Ultimately, the interview revealed a governor more interested in playing national politics and curating historical artifacts than rolling up his sleeves to address Washington’s real issues. Maybe Ferguson should spend less time daydreaming about lawsuits against Trump and more time figuring out how to fix the crises piling up in his own state. Read more at King 5.

Seattle’s Transit Horror Show: A Deadly Fare of Democrat Policies

A King County Metro driver’s brutal murder is the latest tragedy in a region where Democrats’ anti-police policies have made public transit danger zones. Shawn Yim’s stabbing death comes amid escalating attacks on bus drivers and riders, as unions beg for basic safety measures like more transit police and better driver protections. Despite years of rising violence—ranging from shootings to assaults with coffee and urine—Seattle leaders are only now tossing $2 million at transit security, a Band-Aid on a gaping wound. As state and local officials promise to “prioritize safety,” the question remains: why did it take a murder to get them to care? Perhaps if they hadn’t spent years defunding police and downplaying crime, Yim and others might still be safe. Read more at Center Square.

Seattle’s Next Top Cop: Anti-Second Amendment Cheerleader

Shon Barnes, the rumored pick to lead the Seattle Police Department, has a big problem with the Constitution—specifically, the Second Amendment. In a 2022 interview, Barnes dismissed the right to bear arms as outdated, suggesting it’s time to “evolve” beyond what the Founders intended. Conveniently ignoring that criminals don’t follow gun laws, Barnes’ anti-gun stance aligns perfectly with Seattle’s failed policies that have fueled violent crime while disarming law-abiding citizens. Instead of cracking down on illegal firearms or enforcing existing laws, Barnes doubles down on rhetoric that penalizes those who follow the rules and empowers those who don’t. If Barnes’ track record is any indication, Seattle’s anti-gun agenda is about to get a loud new cheerleader—and its residents will be left paying the price. Read more at KTTH.
