DEMOCRATS FORCE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO PLAN FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND GIVE GRANTS FUNDED BY THE CO2 TAX TO COVER THE COST WHILE REQUIRING THEM TO ADVERTISE THE FUNDING SO VOTERS DON’T REPEAL IT IN NOVEMBER
INSLEE USES YOUR TAX DOLLARS TO FORCE LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND OTHERS TO ADVERTISE A CARBON TAX THAT YOU DON'T WANT
Our friend Todd Myers at the Washington Policy Center covers how the Inslee Administration has created a slick logo and style guide to promote the “Climate Commitment Act,” the state’s CO2 tax. This means that organizations that receive money generated from the CCA are forced to advertise the CCA using the logo as well as include political language like, “The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Information about the CCA is available at www.climate.wa.gov.” They aren’t even trying to hide that they are using this to help paint a rosy picture for the CCA as voters prepare to vote on its repeal at the ballot box in November…Washington Policy Center
WA-03 CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE LESLIE LEWALLEN CALLS OUT STATE PARTY'S "UNITY" PLAN
This weekend, the Washington State Republican Party will gather in Spokane for its state convention. The party will conduct its usual business of electing delegates and alternates to the RNC’s National Convention and passing a party platform, but it will also do something never done before—allow the body to vote on the party’s endorsements of statewide and federal candidates. Leslie Lewallen, a candidate for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District penned an op-ed panning the party’s choice to allow the self-selected convention attendees, made up primarily of party insiders, to winnow down contests to a single candidate before voters have their say. Her fear is that the convention delegates might select a candidate that appeals to them but won’t be the most electable choice when they have to appeal to independents and other non-Republicans to win at the ballot box…The Columbian
HOMELESS YOUTH INITIATIVE SHUTTERS AFTER CONTRACTOR "MISSPENDS" $330K OF TAXPAYER FUNDS
A pilot program to support homeless youth in Washington through direct support for essentials like groceries and housing has shuttered after the Department of Commerce’s Office of Homeless Youth discovered that the contractor hired to run the program “misspent” over 20% of the program’s initial $1.5 million in funding. The contractor, SDM Consulting, a registered lobbying firm, abandoned the contract after being ordered to repay the $330K in misspent funds. Despite the contract being reimbursement-based, it appears the money was paid out anyway without proper documentation. Commerce has put SDM on payment plans to recoup the funds, but thus far, none have been repaid…Crosscut
THE COLUMBIAN ED BOARD SAYS IT'S TIME FOR SCHOOLS TO STOP USING THE COVID-19 EXCUSE
Last week, the State Board of Education agreed to extend a waiver of certain graduation requirements to Class of 2024 students. The waiver was enacted in 2021 during the height of the pandemic to address the hardships faced by students at that time. The Columbian Editorial Board says it’s time for school districts to stop using COVID-19 as an excuse for everything and stop reducing requirements on student performance because it is to the detriment of those students. Overall, they call for a return to rigorous standards in both grades and graduation requirements because we aren’t doing kids any favors by reducing requirements and calling their school experience a success. You won’t find us often praising the mainstream media, but in this case, we say “bravo!”…The Columbian
