SEATTLE CITY COUNCILMAN ANDREW LEWIS IS CONFUSED WHY DRUGS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL

EVIDENTLY SEATTLE CAN’T STOP PUBLIC DRUG USE – SO CITY SHOULD JUST GIVE UP

It’s hard to make Seattle City Councilman Andrew Lewis look more feckless than his recent actions covered by Shift have made him out to be, but the Seattle Times provided him the opportunity to prove he is even more confused. A recent column has him saying “I was looking at my statement that I was prepared to read when I planned to vote in favor of it (making public use of drugs illegal), but couldn’t bring myself to say any of it because I knew it wasn’t true.”

You might ask why Councilman Lewis didn’t know what he was going to say on a major public issue until he read it on a piece of paper handed to him by staff, but even worse it appears he doesn’t understand that we have a hard drug problem in Seattle. According to Councilman Lewis “(W)e can’t hide behind a security blanket that this bill was going to get rid of open-air drug use.” You can read more about how the councilman would rather just give up here… Shift,Seattle Times

THE CONSEQUENCES OF DEMOCRATS LEGALIZING DRUGS – OVERDOSES, DEATHS SKYROCKET

Seattle draws most of the attention for drugs in Washington state, but the damage caused by a lack of concerns over drugs is clearly statewide.  The latest news from Spokane’s Spokesman-Review is the “Spokane County Medical Examiner’s office investigated 49% more deaths from 2019 to 2022, many caused by overdoses, accidents and heart disease” and about “30% of the medical examiner’s caseload is overdose deaths, with 250 deaths falling under the classification in 2022.”

You can read about how Fentanyl gets more attention but “methamphetamine overdoses have also soared in the Spokane area” here… Spokesman-Review.

DEMOCRAT JUDGE VERY CONFUSED BY GRAFITTI AND OTHER PROPERTY DAMAGE

Seattle has become a caricature for many liberal jokes over the years, but U.S. District Court Judge  Marsha Pechman seems determined to make the city even more of a laughingstock, ruling that graffiti is free speech and not a property crime.  Even worse, according to the Seattle Times, Judge Pechman advances her own theory that “the criminalization of free speech significantly harms the public interest in far greater measure than the public might benefit from criminalizing property damage.”

You can learn more about how Judge Pechman (a President Bill Clinton appointee) caused the Seattle Police Department to say “This means that until further order of the Court, SPD cannot take action on damage to property under this law” and then reverse that statement after the judge woke up and clarified her order here… Seattle Times.

GEE, COULDN’T THEY HAVE DONE SOME OF THIS WORK SOONER SO THE PARK COULD BE OPEN IN SUMMER?

It’s nice to see improvements take place, but does Snohomish County really have to close its busiest park, Kayak Point, during summer, when people are most likely to use it? The answer is yes, evidently because the Everett Herald reports that “renovations will close the park July 5. The reopening date is to be determined, but construction cannot go past Oct. 15 because of the fish window — when streams are naturally slow — so the work disturbs the fewest fish.”

You can read more about how the “project has been on the drawing board since 2010, ballooning in size to a $20 million endeavor” here… Everett Herald.

SPOKANE COUNCILMAN COMMITTING ETHICAL VIOLATIONS BEFORE HE GETS JUDGE JOB

Shift has already highlighted the danger of appointing an extreme partisan to a judicial post, and that concern has now been further advanced with specifics by a former U.S. Attorney about the actions of Spokane City Councilman Breean Beggs. The damaging details come from the Spokesman-Review that “(I)t’s not a charge to be taken lightly, coming from a former U.S. attorney for Eastern Washington. (Jim) McDevitt has served under three presidents, Democrat and Republican.”

You can read about how the judge “spoke up because ‘the justice system needs to be absolutely free of political influence or the public loses confidence in the system’” and how Councilman Beggs doesn’t care about that here… Shift, Spokesman-Review.
