The Obama administration has been pushing the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) all year, in hopes of securing a free trade legacy for the outgoing president.
Unfortunately for him – and those who favor free trade policies which help Washington State’s economy – the Democrat Party has turned solidly against TPP. That extends from the party’s presidential nominee, former free-trade supporter Hillary Clinton, all the way down to the grassroots activists who mainly supported her primary opponent, Senator Bernie Sanders.
However, the anti-free trade movement – fueled in large part by the big-money donors in the organized labor ranks – does not extend to Washington’s congressional delegation. So, Thurston County Democrats let their feelings be known about their federal representatives, withholding endorsements from Senator Patty Murray and Congressman Denny Heck.
According to the Olympian, “a wave of Bernie Sanders supporters who joined the ranks of Thurston County Democrats in recent months have put elected officials on notice: Oppose the 12-country trade agreement known as the Trans Pacific Partnership or risk losing our support.
That message was loud and clear last week when Thurston County Democrats voted not to endorse two Democratic members of the state’s congressional delegation, Rep. Denny Heck of Olympia and Sen. Patty Murray.”
The far-Left grassroots activists made their my-way-or-the-highway approach. “ ‘If (Heck) wants me to respect his refusal to make a decision, he has to respect that we’re not going to endorse him,’ said Jessica Blose, a Sanders supporter living in Olympia.”
Showing just how out of touch with reality the Thurston County Democrats, it’s leader really said “ ‘I am adamantly opposed to the TPP, and I do believe it is the biggest issue of my lifetime,’ said Thurston County Democrats chairwoman Katie Nelson.”
Of course, this is the same organization that counts noted racist – and Ramtha representative – JZ Knight as its biggest donor, so it’s hard to take anything its leaders would say very seriously.
