The Democrat Party, its allies, and generally anyone who has communicated with party officials must be quite nervous about what will next become public in the growing email hacking scandal that has damaged the Democrat National Committee (DNC). One of the latest revelations concerns Seattle’s oldest law firm – and its’ pretty embarrassing.
Perkins Coie – the firm old enough that it helped The Boeing Company incorporate in 1916 – is well-regarded locally as the former home of such politicos as former Attorney General Rob McKenna, former Congressman Rick White, and current State Senator Cyrus Habib, to name but a few of its politically active lawyers. However, it’s work at the national level (as the “counsel of record” for the Democrat National Committee) that is now generating some questionable publicity for the firm.
According to news reports, it appears Perkins Coie might have “helped the Obama administration to run a “pay for play” operation that could explain how ambassadorships were awarded during Hillary Clinton’s tenure at the State Department, according to new leaked documents purportedly from the Democratic National Committee.”
The email that was leaked was allegedly “sent by Perkins Coie attorney Jacquelyn Lopez to staffers at the DNC, in which Lopez asked them to set up a call ‘to go over our process for handling donations from donors who have given us pay to play letters.’ A separate document lists the presidential appointments that were doled out to donors. That list notes the highest bidder, Matthew Barzun, contributed $3.5 million to President Obama’s first election in 2008, and subsequently received an appointment as America’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and Sweden in August 2009.”
As the media noted, “Lopez’s firm, Perkins Coie, has performed legal work for both the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The firm drew fire from Democrats who supported Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders over Clinton in the party’s presidential primary over that perceived conflict of interest.”
If the email is authentic, which previous leaks from the self-described “Guccifer 2.0” hacker have been, this could be just the start of a scandal for Perkins Coie. It could be especially damaging because the Chair of its Political Law practice is Bob Bauer, the former White House Counsel during President Barack Obama’s first term.
