Next year the state starts a $1.2 billion, 11-mile widening project as part of $3 billion in work planned for I-405. Don’t think the widening will help general purpose lane drivers deal with congestion much, however. Most of the new highway space will be for express toll lanes. (Seattle Times)
Premium increases in Obamacare exchanges nationwide are expected to average 3.6% next year – but Washington’s jump will be much higher. Insurers here are asking for rate hikes around 18%, and even if lowered by regulators will far exceed the national average. The AP attributes the disparity to “local market conditions.” (Associated Press)

Facing term limits in his current role, Snohomish County Councilmember Brian Sullivan (D) is eyeing his next office – County Treasurer. “It just seemed like something I’d like to pursue,” Sullivan said. “I think I have a reputation of being a fair and honest player and an honest worker. This is an extension of my career goals” – and an extension of his government paycheck. (Everett Herald)
