After 11 long years, the McCleary education funding lawsuit is finally over. Jay Inslee may have won the 2012 gubernatorial race, but in the end it was Rob McKenna’s levy swap proposal that won out in the most important state issue of the decade. (Shift WA)

Happening in Olympia

State Sen. Phil Fortunato (R-Auburn) said that Sound Transit is illegally using a vehicle-valuation method that was repealed, all so it can overcharge people for car tabs. “We’re saying, ‘If the thing was illegal to begin with, the law is invalidated; we want our money back,’” Fortunato said. Western Washington

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing Whatcom County’s sheriff’s office, saying it must provide opiate-withdrawal medication to prisoners. The lawsuit contends that sheriff’s office policy violates the Americans with Disability Act, because opioid addiction qualifies as a disability. (Bellingham Herald) 

Organizers of the campaign to repeal Seattle’s head tax say they now have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. A spokesman said the campaign is gathering more than the 17,000 signatures needed, which must be submitted by June 14, “so there’s not a chance of legal challenges and, two, we want to make a statement.” (Crosscut)

Eastern Washington

The Spokane Valley City Council approved a five-year lease with the original owners of Splash Down, who plan to reopen the water park this month. The lease payment to the city will be $15,000 per year. (The Spokesman-Review)
