Washington State is leading a coalition of 18 states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its policy of separating immigrant families at the border. Of the lawsuit, Governor Jay Inslee said, “Donald Trump’s propaganda campaign has failed, and he’s engaged in a propaganda campaign.” (My Northwest)
Calling him “as unrepentant as any defendant in memory,” prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence former State Auditor Troy Kelley to more than seven years in federal prison. Kelley, a Democrat from Tacoma, was convicted in December 2017 of possession of stolen funds, making false declarations, and filing false tax returns. (NW News Network)
Western Washington
Seattle is set to break the record for most consecutive months a city has led the nation in home price increases. 20 months ago when the streak began, the median home price was around $625,000. Now, that price has ballooned to $830,000. On the Eastside in the same period, prices rose from $768,000 to $960,000. (Seattle Times)
Eastern Washington
Growers throughout Washington say that with harvest requiring such a high demand of labor to get through the season, they rely on many who lack valid work documents. A bill in the U.S. House of Representatives would allow undocumented immigrants to stay in the country as long as they work in agriculture. “The legislation provides them the ability to come forward and get right with the law,” said Cong. Dan Newhouse (R-Sunnyside). “They can cross the border legally, work and return home legally.” (Seattle Times)
Spokane school officials say they might partner with the city to place a $505.3 million bond on the November ballot. The district has until mid-August to place the bond on the November ballot. (The Spokesman-Review)
