The Morning Briefing – June 19, 2019

Governor Inslee will hold an #AskGovInslee Twitter town hall at 1:45pm this afternoon to review the 2019 Legislative Session. Will his staff protect him from questions from constituents asking why their money is subsidizing his presidential campaign?

Happening in Olympia

Apparently, things are slow on the Presidential campaign this week for Jay Inslee as he will finally answer questions via Twitter regarding the 2019 Legislative Session. It will be interesting to see if Inslee’s staff will allow the Governor to respond to why taxpayers are subsidizing his presidential campaign by paying $4 million for his security. Also, we doubt they will have him answer if he thinks it is good for our state to sacrifice hundreds of jobs in Tacoma and Cowlitz County (by reversing his support for methanol and natural gas plants) just so his presidential campaign could appeal to the national environmental special interests.

“Green New Deal, Green New Deal,” the crowd sang at Seattle City Hall. “Bus and trains and bicycle wheels. We need orca, salmon, and seals.” Approximately 100 people delivered their demands to Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan for the city to eliminate climate pollution by 2030. Protest organizers admit that the multitude of previous city climate proposals have not had the desired effect they promised, “Despite years of good rhetoric on climate, we know that in recent years, Seattle’s climate pollution is actually rising,” an organizer said. Congressman Dan Newhouse states his support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). In this op-ed, Central Washington Representative Dan Newhouse states that he supports Congress ratifying the USMCA which President Trump signed last year. Newhouse writes, “Washington’s exports to Canada and Mexico totaled $11.3 billion in 2018. The lack of a trade agreement, recent tariffs and overall uncertainty in the agricultural community have caused our state’s exports to fall alarmingly.” (Crosscut)
