A bug in software led to at least a dozen Washington prison inmates being released too early, or held too long. Officials say as many as 3,512 cases are being checked, though that number might include some duplicates. “We need to do what we need to do, to get this fixed and get this fixed right, in the interest of justice and public safety,” said Rep. Brad Klippert (R-Kennewick). Just another issue to add to the long list of failures under the Inslee administration. (Yakima Herald)
State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing the Trump Administration yet again. Ferguson’s latest stunt is an effort to block a new rule that bars federal family-planning money from going to organizations that provide abortions, like Planned Parenthood. “We will not allow the federal government to dictate what a provider can or cannot say to a patient,” Ferguson said. Governor Jay Inslee spent another day on his pre-presidental campaign by appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday morning. Inslee awkwardly danced around the question about when he would officially jump into the presidential campaign arena. “I’ve been pleased by what I’ve been hearing across the country, that people do want a president that will act on a real emergency, which is climate change,” Inslee said. Seattle businesses and residents are hoping Mayor Jenny Durkan will help address issues in the justice system like helping rehabilitate repeat offenders and reducing crime. “A relatively small number of people with a huge impact on our neighborhoods are cycling through the criminal justice system without any meaningful prospect of changing their behavior,” said a letter from the group. Durkan said she is working with local police and prosecutors to determine if there is a set of chronic offenders and ways to deal with them. (Seattle Times)
Seattle City Council yesterday approved Sam Zimbabwe for director of the Seattle Department of Transportation. “I’m heartened that City Council voted today to confirm him as the permanent Director of the Seattle Department of Transportation,” said Mayor Durkan. Zimbabwe previously served as the Chief Project Delivery Officer for the District Department of Transportation for Washington, D.C. (MyNorthwest)
