Wahkiakum County Sheriff Mark Howie said last week that he has no intention of actively enforcing I-1639, the recently-passed gun measure. “I am not going to violate my oath I have taken to uphold the constitution and go and check people’s houses on a yearly basis to make sure they’re complying with this initiative as it’s written,” the sheriff said of his decision. The Lewis County’s Sheriff’s Office, too, is showing reluctance to enforce the gun control measure. “The problem with the way 1639 is written is that it’s almost an unenforceable law,” said Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan Meyer, who is the Sheriff’s Office’s legal counsel. The initiative may violate the “single-subject” clause for initiatives, Meyer thinks. “When we throw this many things into one initiative, we’re going to have problems, and I think that’s what we have here,” he said.(My Northwest)

After a manual recount of votes in the 26th District state Senate race, officials confirmed Democrat Emily Randall as the winner. “And of course I want to congratulate my opponent for the win,” said Republican Mary McClendon. “Obviously, I’m not done. I’ll be back.” (Kitsap Sun)
Amina Ahmed died Saturday in a car crash, not even two months into her tenure on the SeaTac city council. “She has been someone who cares about social equity and justice,” said a friend of Ahmed’s. “She has served anyone who was in need.” Ahmed leaves behind two children, including a young adult daughter who lives in SeaTac. Despite protests, Spokane police broke up a homeless encampment in front of City Hall. A few of the demonstrators, including Councilwoman Kate Burke, chained themselves to tents in protest. “The downtown resource officers are doing everything they can to assist these people getting to warming shelters,” said Spokane Police spokesman John O’Brien.
