Seattle’s second 24-hour homeless shelter opened yesterday with 100 beds at the First Presbyterian Church on First Hill. This shelter will allow for people to bring guests, store belongings and seek support from staff members.
The Seattle Community Police Commission is requesting a meeting and documentation regarding the $100,000 back pay settlement to former Officer Cynthia Whitlatch, who was fired in 2015. As members of the commission only just recently learned about the settlement on Wednesday, they are now requesting clarification from Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole.
Eastern Washington
Spokane is dumping basalt boulders below I-90 to fight homeless camping. Spending $150,000 on the boulders, the city council is hoping that blocking off the area under the interstate will push homeless people to seek assistance and support rather than to remain camping out in the city.
Former chancellor at WSU’s Spokane campus, Lisa Brown, is challenging U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) to represent the 5th Congressional District. The Spokane area has not had a Democrat representing them in Congress since 1994. “It’s time to get back to work,” Brown said in her announcement video.
