Drivers with marijuana in their systems who have been involved in fatal car crashes have doubled since 2012 – when the legalization of marijuana occurred in the state – bringing the total number for 2016 up to 79 fatal car crashes.
Western Washington
A former King County Sheriff’s Deputy is suing the county and two investigators after claiming they violated his rights. Matthew Tighe has said the sting operation on him and his family was unconstitutional – and was retaliation by Sheriff John Urquhart.
Olympia taxpayers will be voting on whether or not to allow their Police Department an extra $2.8 million a year through a property tax levy increase. “This is an opportunity for us to take community policing up to full scale,” Councilman Jim Cooper said. The property tax will climb to $2.71 per $1,000 of assessed value if this levy passes.
Olympia City Council candidate Lisa Parshley is facing claims that she does not live within city limits. She has denied the claims and Thurston County’s Canvassing Board will be reaching a decision regarding the matter on October 9th – at which point they will decide on the status of Parshley’s voter registration. The decision will not impact her candidacy, but may open the door for challenges.
Eastern Washington
After a six-day strike, foreign farmworkers at Larson Fruit have reached an agreement with their employers after working with Familias Unidas por la Justicia – which is a farmworker union. “No one is perfect, and these guys brought some things to our attention that made us realize, ‘Wow, we could do better’,” Keith Larson, owner of Larson Fruit, said.
Clark County fire commissioner Danny Walling has been penalized $1,000 by the Public Disclosure Commission (PDC) after they discovered that he had not been filing documents regarding his personal financial affairs despite state law requiring that he do so every year.
