Western Washington

Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole will step down from her post, ending her three-year tenure on December 31. Mayor Durkan’s office will formally announce this news at a press conference later today. She is also expected to outline her process for selecting a new chief as well as name a new fire chief. (KOMO News)

The Port of Seattle will pay out $8 million for wrongful termination, adding to a growing list of challenges the Port has faced this year. The lawsuit contended that the former employees were fired for opposing lease concessions to businesses owned by friends and political supporters of an outgoing Port commissioner. Washington voters set a record this November…just not one to be proud of. Close to two-thirds of Washington voters chose not to vote this year, setting a new low for voter turnout. The previous low mark was set in 2015 when turnout only made it to about 38.5 percent. (The Seattle Times)

The Seattle City Council will decide whether it’s wants to be seriously consider the Oak View Group’s plan for a $600 million renovation of KeyArena, as they vote on whether to approve a Memorandum of Understanding with the group. You might recall a dramatic no decision from the council last year when a similar proposal from OVG was voted on. (The Seattle Times)

King County thinks they’ve cracked the code to solving its growing homelessness crisis. All they need is a table. The “one table” program sets to bring together the business and political communities, along with nonprofits and service providers, to tackle the issue. (MyNorthwest)

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan isn’t giving up hope for an unconstitutional city income tax, although even she admits passage is a “longshot.” Recently a judge ruled that the city’s income tax was unconstitutional, something just about everyone expected would happen. (Washington State Wire)
