Gov. Inslee has signed a bill into law that will alert relevant parties if someone fails a background check when trying to buy a gun. Those notified would include law enforcement agencies and anybody who may have a protection order against these persons attempting to buy a gun.
Department of Corrections official demoted after mistakenly releasing prisoners early is now only demoted for one year. David Dunnington was initially demoted permanently after it was discovered that up to 2,700 prisoners were released early from incarceration between 2002 and 2015 after the department failed to notice a computer-programming error.
Western Washington
American Cities: “Don’t Make ‘The Seattle Mistake’ On Housing. In a piece published in Forbes, Roger Valdez shines light on the mistake that Bellevue may be about to make with regards to housing, as they, “may be in the process of a four-step walk into institutionalized housing inflation.” You can read more about it here.
King County property taxes are some of the highest in the nation, having shot up 35% in the last four years from new tax bills, voter-approved tax hikes and climbing property values.
Seattle police officers now must refer to suspects as “community members” when writing use-of-force reports. “I think this is all in an effort to make sure our report writing sounds politically correct,” Kevin Stucky of the Seattle Police Officers’ Guild said.
Amazon is building a permanent homeless shelter in downtown Seattle, with construction beginning this October. They will be replacing an old Travelodge, which has been in use by Mary’s Place to shelter families in need, with two Amazon office buildings that will include 62 rooms to be used by Mary’s Place as a homeless shelter.
Coastal razor clam digging season is over due to high levels of marine toxins, which can be fatal if people consume too much of them.
Eastern Washington
The collapsed tunnel at Hanford has begun to be filled in, as workers move to repair and stabilize the tunnel holding radioactive material and waste. Gov. Inslee has said he will be seeing “enforcement action,” over the collapse.
The $5 million Spokane Transit Authority Plaza downtown is almost finished with remodeling. Aside from upgrading the overall look, the STA will provide better views of buses from inside of the building and electronic displays to help with arrival and departure time accuracy.
