Happening In Olympia
Legislators have only finished the budget before the end of regular session five times since 1951. As we enter the third special session, we’re creeping closer to the end of the fiscal year, which could mean a government shutdown if lawmakers don’t finalize a budget in time.
High school seniors who fail biology assessments will be able to graduate, earning their diplomas thanks to legislation passed by lawmakers that will “de-link” the biology assessment from graduation requirements until the end of 2021.
Western Washington
The King County Council is set to vote today on allowing buses to continue running through the transit tunnel in downtown Seattle until 2019. This is part of an effort to help decrease traffic congestion, which has only gotten worse over the past year.
Seattle elementary school enrollment levels have increased almost 80% since 2007 – leading many to call for more schools in downtown Seattle.
Eastern Washington
Spokane City Council voted to install 50 LED lights by Lewis and Clark High School beneath the I-90 overpass as a part of an effort to reduce crime. “The safety of students is of paramount importance, and that area wasn’t safe. It was a dark hole,” Councilmember Lori Kinnear said.
Spokane Falls Community College is shortening their class list due to lack of funding. “There’s not much more we can reduce without really impacting the quality of education that we offer,” CCS Chancellor Christine Johnson said.
