Waking up for work after a three day weekend

Happening in Olympia

Senate Democrats released their supplemental budget proposal yesterday that would temporarily lower property taxes next year, Republicans want more of the state’s large tax revenue increase to go to property tax relief. The Democrat proposal also raises teacher salaries this year rather than next. Since the proposal would use budget reserves, it would need a 60% vote to pass, which would require Republican votes. Attorney General Bob Ferguson tried to stir up some controversy with a gun tweet, but Twitter users fired back for either his disingenuous phrasing or his lack of knowledge, tough to say which. Ferguson said an 18-year-old can purchase a rifle with no *enhanced* background check. Except that gun purchasers do have to go through background checks, and an enhanced background check could mean whatever Bob Ferguson wants it to mean.

Construction for an animal overpass in Spokane is now visible to motorists traveling westbound on I-90. “You’re improving safety, you’re relieving congestion and you’re also looking at the environmental aspects,” said Jen Watkins, Conservation Northwest’s I-90 Wildlife Bridges Coalition coordinator.
