The Morning Briefing – August 28, 2017

Thank you to all of the first responders working tirelessly to get those affected by Hurricane Harvey to safety.

Happening in Olympia

The Dept. of Ecology has ceased handing out new permits for salmon farm net pens until further notice because of the thousands of Atlantic salmon that escaped into the Puget Sound – potentially endangering the native salmon in the area.

Washington State Patrol may change protocol for handling crashes after a fatal accident was mistaken for an abandoned vehicle. Some changes being looked at relate to how the WSP and CRESA, the organization who receives missing person reports, communicate.

Washington state is looking for volunteers to pay by the mile for their road usage. The state’s Transportation Commission is looking to determine whether or not paying by the mile is a realistic taxing option.

Western Washington

The City of Seattle is moving to ban plastic straws and silverware this coming year as they attempt to force restaurants in the city to only use compostable or paper utensils and straws.

Eastern Washington

Washington State University students are staging a sit-in, responding to recent racial tensions and a pair of bomb threats on campus. “In the first week of class, we shouldn’t have to deal with three swastikas and two bomb threats,” sit-in organizer Chijoke Emeka said.
