Political campaign emails are generally self-serving, and humility is rarely involved. Yet, the one today from Jay Inslee, asking you to “thank him” for his leadership was certainly more smarmy than most.
First off, “leadership” and “Inslee” rarely go together in the same sentence, so to keep people from deleting the email immediately as an obvious joke the Inslee campaign made it appear as if the email was coming from Patty Murray.
Second, the Patty-Jay team wanted you to thank Jay for his “his resolve to do hard things” in signing the Real Hope/Dream Act. Of course, he had virtually nothing to do with getting the bill passed, as it took bi-partisan coalition in the State Senate – which Jay Inslee generally spends his time personally attacking – to break the legislative logjam by actually providing some money to pay for the bill. That’s something that neither Jay Inslee or House Democrats had proposed doing.
Third, it ultimately took outside pressure from interest groups to force House Speaker Frank Chopp to bring the Senate bill to the floor for a vote, after it had sat for several weeks while Chopp seethed about not getting enough credit for the bill.
Now, of course, Inslee is taking all the credit, with an assist from Patty Murray.
