Now that the bi-partisan Majority Coalition Caucus in the State Senate has started moving forward with its plan for increasing education funding, as required by the Supreme Court after decades of Democrats in Olympia underfunding public education, the formerly-in-the-majority liberals are attacking the idea of dedicating more money to our public schools.
It seems that Senator Andy Hill’s bill to require that two-thirds of all revenue growth over the next 10 years be spent on education – from early learning to college – doesn’t meet the Democrat test of being able to give more money to their favorite special interests. The liberals’ excuse – “We can’t fund what happens inside the classroom by cutting what happens outside of it” ignores reality, but it’s a slogan they can remember.
Of course, Sen. Hill’s bill doesn’t call for making cuts – he targets making the best use of increased revenue due to a growing economy. But to Democrats that equals a “cut”, but because they might lose the ability to give a “cut” to the special interests funding their campaigns.
