King County Executive Dow Constantine made it clear who his most important constituents are after he vetoed a plan that would have kept Metro buses running. Constantine’s veto follows a threat reported on KOMO radio from the leader of the King County Labor Council that he “would never forget” people who voted to keep the buses running.
Dave Freiboth, the Executive Secretary of the Labor Council, was evidently afraid that he would lose credibility and that bus drivers might not get their usual pay raises in the next contract with King County if the plan sponsored by Democrat County Councilman Rod Dembowski became law. Freiboth was far less concerned with the impact on bus riders, saying “What this ordinance implies is that we were lying to the public” during the failed Prop. 1 campaign earlier this year.
Of course, Constantine, Freiboth and other Democrat officials were “lying to the public” during the campaign, as the Seattle Times reported. But that was OK, as the tax increase (that voters resoundingly rejected) would have helped line the pockets of the special interests who funded the Prop. 1 campaign – like the King County Labor Council.
