According to Jay Inslee, “the oil industry’s obfuscation of a complicated issue” was the reason the energy tax initiative he supported was rejected by voters. “But Inslee isn’t giving up on the issue, saying ‘we are in really good shape to pass climate-change legislation’ in the next session of the Legislature. He pointed to newly elected Democratic legislators, saying, ‘I know these candidates. I have interviewed all of them’ and that ‘virtually all of them see the world through a scientific lens.’” (Seattle Times)

Langley Mayor Tim Callison advised the City Council last week that the city should continue running its own police outfit and not join forces with the Island County sheriff. “I recommend that the Langley Police Department remains a separate municipal police force and we do not enter into negotiations with the Island County Sheriff’s Office at this time,” Callison said. According to the Walla Walla County Auditor’s Office, the number of registered voters in the county is likely the highest ever. Turnout should end up around 70%, which isn’t a record for a midterm in the county but still high. As of Friday, 19,587 ballots had been counted (representing 56.24 percent of the registered voters) with roughly 4,800 ballots remain to be counted. (Walla Walla Union-Bulletin)
