Happening in Olympia

Washington’s state Senate is looking to hire a human resources officer who would investigate complaints of harassment or inappropriate behavior. The House and Senate have come under criticism for outdated harassment standards and processes. Under the plan, a human resources officer would have authority to review complaints and conduct investigations, said Brad Hendrickson, Secretary of the Senate. (Seattle Times)

The Washington State Transportation Commission is scheduled to select one of three toll rate options later today for the new SR 99 tunnel. All three options have toll rates ranging from $1.50-$2.50, with varying overnight and midday rates. Learn more about the options here. (My Northwest)

Western Washington

Months later, the public is still waiting for the results of an audit on all Seattle streetcar construction before the city moves forward with the City Center Connector project. In a recent interview, Mayor Jenny Durkan suggested the project may not happen. “There may be other options available to connect those two things, that won’t be a continuous route,” she said. Eastern Washington

In interviews last week, Cong. Cathy McMorris Rodgers discussed her support for protecting local dams, among other topics. “Dams and fish can coexist,” she said. “We must support this system for the benefits that it provides for our region.” Her opponent Lisa Brown also said she opposes breeching the dams, but the two differed on other issues. The federal Department of Energy says stabilizing a tunnel filled with radioactive waste is a near-term priority and shouldn’t wait for a public comment period. State Ecology Dept. spokesman Randy Bradbury said Ecology officials will review DOE’s request, but that currently they plan to go on with its own public process. (Tri-City Herald)
