17 Pierce County politicians signed a letter to state Rep. David Sawyer (D-Tacoma) asking him not to run for re-election. The request is in response to eight women accusing Sawyer of inappropriate behavior. (Washington State Wire)
The WEA is working to close every charter school in the state…again. Liv Finne with the Washington Policy Center writes: “The powerful union has filed another lawsuit against charter school families, arguing that the voter-approved and publicly-funded schools shouldn’t count as real public schools. Union executives are angry because teachers at charter schools are the only public school teachers who do not have to pay them monthly union dues.” (Washington Policy Center)
Western Washington
Kshama Sawant went to Twitter yesterday to call out Seattle for being too friendly to business. The city councilmember, who certainly can’t be accused of being too business-friendly, wrote: “City’s becoming a playground for the rich. Working people need to fight to tax big biz like Amazon to fund affordable housing!” Sawant, a proponent of the head tax or employee hours tax, is encouraging her colleagues to double the tax rate that was first proposed. Susana Asberry, a full-time instructor at the University of Washington, told the Todd Herman Show that she had been put on probation for mentioning God in response to a student’s question. Asberry says a student asked her about her bucket list, to which Asberry replied: “When I retire, I want to share the word of God with people.” (MyNorthwest)
Eastern Washington
After passing away at the age of 20 from a brain aneurysm, as an organ donor Justin Elzinga was able to saves the lives of four people. As part of the National Donate Life Month, Gov. Inslee will be honoring organ donors, including Justin, from around the state. (Tri-City Herald)
