The Renton Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into King County Sheriff John Urquhart for one of multiple sexual assault accusations against him. The man alleging the assault worked for the sheriff’s office for nine years and is now a police officer out of state. (King 5)

Also under criticism is Sheriff John Urquhart’s defense against the sexual assault allegations as he continues to impugn the alleged victims. County councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles wrote: “I am very concerned about how the Sheriff has handled matters, especially with regard to furthering a chilling effect on individuals’ willingness to bring forward complaints…” (King 5)

Seattle housing activists disrupted a hearing at City Hall to demand the city stop removing unauthorized homeless encampments. The protest, organized by Kshama Sawant, is in response to many authorities arguing that camps are a danger to the public. (The Seattle Times)

Eastern Washington

The Walla Walla City Council voted 5-2 to ban absentee-owners from using their properties as short-term rentals. The city has seen a growth spurt in short-term rentals whose owners inhabit them for fewer than 275 days per calendar year and rent them out for up to 29 days at a time. (The Union-Bulletin)
