Happening in Olympia

As liberals continue to press for a road usage tax, some have asked how one would work within the framework of our state’s constitution. Mariya Frost with the Washington Policy Center provides a thorough overview of how the 18th amendment, which protects gas tax revenue for highway purposes only, would apply to the road usage tax. Western Washington

Another Democrat is jumping in the race to succeed retiring Congressman Dave Reichert in the 8th Congressional District. Brayden Olson, 29, is most well known for being compared to the fictional character, Christian Grey, from Fifty Shades of Grey. (The Seattle Times)

Major Mitzi Johanknecht, currently running for King County Sheriff, says she opposes heroin injection sites. She told Todd Herman the sites, “Creates a public safety hazard for the community and our officers, our deputies, our detectives who work to deter drug expansion and sales.” (MyNorthwest)

The Olympia City Council is still considering an increase of the sales tax to help combat homelessness. Estimates suggest the tax increase, referred to as the Home Fund,  could bring in $2.3 million each year. (The Olympian)

“I’m moving my business out of Seattle city limits, not only because of the homeless situation, but because of a variety of factors; definitely the tone and tenor of the city hasn’t helped the situation,” a Seattle business owner told Dori Monson. Owner, Mark Benezra, said other businesses feel the same way. (MyNorthwest)

Eastern Washington

The recall effort of Yakima County Clerk Janelle Riddle was called off due to the high price of running such a campaign. “The bottom line for us was the cost,” a supporter of the recall effort said. “Is it worth $250,000 of taxpayer money to get her out of office six months early? Probably not.” (The Yakima Herald)
