Did King County voters actually say no to a new tax?

Happening in Olympia

Seattle education officials disagree with Attorney General Bob Ferguson, saying the new school-funding plan does not satisfy the McCleary decision. “Generally, the thinking is that they (lawmakers) made some progress,” executive director with the Washington Association of School Business Officials Brianne King said, “but I think… there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

Lawmakers failed to fix Sound Transit’s taxing problem, despite a bill sponsored by Rep. Mark Harmsworth (R-Mill Creek) winning support three times in the House. “It’s really disappointing (that the bill never passed into law) because the bill is nonpartisan. Everyone seems to want to fix it,” yet no solution was transferred into law during the session – nor during the three special sessions that followed.

Western Washington

The sales tax proposal for increasing funding for arts has failed in King County. Voters in the liberal city seem to have finally met a tax they didn’t want.

Seattle will see their first female mayor, with Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon advancing to the general election. Former US Attorney Durkan holds the lead with urban planner Moon in second. Third place Nikkita Oliver has yet to concede.

Everett will likely see their first female mayor in 124 years, with the top two spots currently being held by two City Council members – Cassie Franklin and Judy Tuohy – as they head into the general election.

Eastern Washington

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) is holding a town hall in Spokane this Thursday at Gonzaga University’s Cataldo Hall. Attendees must live in the 5th Congressional District.

Port of Moses Lake was awarded a $9.9 million federal grant from the Dept. of Transportation so that they may finish a railroad project. “The new and improved rail lines will help retain local manufacturers, provide opportunities for business expansion, and attract new industries.”
