Updates from the Primary

Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon are in the lead for Seattle’s Mayoral race. Durkan earned 31.6% of the vote, with Moon winning 15.6% and Nikkita Oliver following in third place with 13.9%. One thing is for certain, Seattle will have their first female mayor in 89 years.

As expected, Republican Jinyoung Englund and Democrat Manka Dhingra are advancing to the general election in the race to replace the seat vacated with the passing of the late Senator Andy Hill.

In a rare rejection of a tax increase, 55% of King County voters opposed the $500 million arts levy. “The high cost, when added to the other tax increases people faced over the last three years – I think a lot of voters said enough is enough,” said Metropolitan King County Councilmember Larry Gossett.

It looks like Seattle voters have passed over business-friendly candidate Sara Nelson, in favor of two far-left progressives for Seattle City Council Position No. 8.

Candidates Candice Mumm and Breean Breggs lead their races for Spokane City Council, with both candidates taking at least a 3,000-vote lead over their next closest competitor.

Happening Statewide

Lawmakers have fulfilled their paramount duty in funding education, according to Attorney General Bob Ferguson. He has requested that the State Supreme Court end the McCleary lawsuit in recognition of lawmakers fully funding education during the marathon 2017 legislative session.

Western Washington

A sign with “Heroin Here” was posted outside of a house in Lake Stevens and led to the arrest of two people with outstanding warrants, as well as to the eviction of the remaining tenants. “There’s enough happening in the world, you don’t want that going on across the street from you,” a neighbor said of the arrest and removal of at least one heroin-infested home from the neighborhood.

King County’s DOT has apologized for removing the 9/11 roadside memorial in Preston last week, admitting they, “should have reached out to the community before removing the flags, banners, and messages.” Transportation Director Harold Taniguchi said they would, “work with Preston to find a solution that respects both our legal obligations and the values and desires of this community.”

Eastern Washington

Ronald Reinmann, president of the Port of Pasco Commission, passed away last night following an accident this last Sunday evening. Reinmann’s friends and family are in our prayers.

The Kalispel Tribe broke ground at the Northern Quest Casino site yesterday, which will be seeing the additions of a 216-unit apartment complex and movie theater along with the casino expansion construction.
