Some lawmakers are suggesting that Gov. Inslee worked behind the scenes to stop an oversight bill for the Dept. of Corrections. “We’ve received reports that it’s the governor’s office that’s put pressure on the [House] speaker not to bring that bill up in the House,” Sen. Mike Padden (R-Spokane Valley) said. “If we don’t enact some of these reforms, we could be right back in the same boat that we were, that caused the early release scandal.”
More charter schools are slated to open this year. Summit Atlas and Green Dot Middle School, both in Seattle, will be opening this coming fall with two schools headed to Walla Walla in 2018.
Western Washington
Assaults on jurors and courthouse employees across from the King County Courthouse, as well as reports of unsanitary conditions in the surrounding areas, have led councilmembers and judges to demand area cleanups. Councilmember Larry Gossett said he, “didn’t like power-washing the sidewalks because it brought back images of the use of hoses against civil-rights activists.”
An initiative by Tim Eyman would prevent car tab taxes from rising above $30 as well as undo the Sound Transit car tab fees which have almost tripled for some people this last year.
Seattle Mayoral candidate Jenny Durkan has racked up more endorsements, gaining favor with the union local SEIU 775 in addition to current Seattle Mayor Ed Murray.
Edmonds has joined the Sierra Club’s clean energy campaign in pledging to get cities to rely on renewable energy by 2025.
