Gov. Inslee announced the start of a third special session yesterday. If both chambers can’t agree on a budget by June 30th, much of our state’s government will shut down.
Seattle Mayoral Race
Former U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan is leading the race for Mayor of Seattle, according to a poll done by the Washington State Wire. 49.7% of respondents say they view Durkan favorably, with 30.1% of those polled naming her as their top choice for mayor. Bob Hasegawa came up as the second most popular candidate for mayor.
Current Seattle Mayor Ed Murray intends to conduct a poll this week to determine whether or not he will re-join the mayoral race. Murray would have to run as a write-in candidate, as he did not file for re-election before the deadline to be included on the ballot.
Western Washington
An income tax in Seattle would cost the city $6 million a year to enforce. This data came from a cost analysis done by City Hall. This yearly fee for administration and enforcement would be in addition to the $10 to $13 million fee the city would have to pay to set up systems to track and monitor the tax.
Eastern Washington
Spokane City Council approved spending $510,000 to fully fund a 24-hour homeless shelter through the end of the year. In 2018, they will commit $1.1 million to fund homeless shelters that operate day and night as well.
