Happening In Olympia
Republican Senators are fighting to lower car tab fees. If the House passes SB 5893, sponsored by Sen. Steve O’Ban (R-University Place), Sound Transit would be forced to use a more accurate and fair method of vehicle valuation in implementing their car tab fees. This is the third time the Senate has passed a version of this bill.
Western Washington
“If you think an income tax is a good idea… let’s vote on it for the tenth time, because we’ve already rejected this nine times,” Jason Mercier said on the Dori Monson Show, showing how socialist Seattle Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s proposed income tax legislation undermines voters. “Saying, ‘we are going to get the courts to do what the voters won’t do,’ there’s something very undemocratic about that.” (Read more here.)
The Seattle City Council Finance Committee held a public hearing on income tax last night.
Calls for the Port of Seattle to change their bidding process are being made. The Port is attempting to kick Ivar’s out of the main port despite 12 years of success. “Port commissioners need to further improve the concession bidding formula so it gives more weight to the experience and contributions of vendors that are truly local,” The Seattle Times editorial board wrote. Seattle schools will receive $2.3 million to change start times so that all schools will begin at 8am or 9am. This comes after the City Council approved the one-time grant yesterday.
Boeing could be moving up to 3,000 jobs to Arizona by 2020. The company has confirmed they plan to relocate their Shared Services Group away from the Puget Sound.
Two environmental groups and the Suquamish Tribe are suing the Navy for allegedly violating clean water laws when decommissioning an aircraft this last winter.
Tacoma is set to open their massive $2.1 million tent for the homeless in 11 days. The temperature-controlled shelter is part of the emergency homeless plan and will provide restrooms, running water and security.
Lawsuit against Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has been dropped. “I believe the withdrawal of the lawsuit vindicates me,” Murray said. Murray has reportedly not ruled out running as a write-in candidate.
Eastern Washington
Veterans in the Spokane area complained after Lewis and Clark High School failed to fly their flag at half-staff on Memorial Day. “I retired after 20 years in the Air Force. Unfortunately, a lot of my friends died. A lot of them out there are at the Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake. It’s rather personal,” veteran Stephen Latoszek told the Spokesman.
