Senate Republicans set a new record for funding education, allocating $12,500 to every child in Washington. Overall, the budget would provide $21.9 billion for K-12, an increase of $3.8 billion.
SB 5620 mandates uniform regulations for ride share services across the state. If the bill is passed, Uber would no longer need local approval. SB 5620 has passed through the Senate into the House.
Western Washington
Sound Transit is asking for $225 million more so they can build the light rail across I-90. In February, Mercer Island City Council voted to sue Sound Transit over their scheduled closure a main arterial street to prevent major traffic disruptions. Typical of Sound Transit to set their plan in motion without fully comprehending costs, only to return to the table requesting more funding amid conflict.
Seattle-based Amazon won a $1.5 billion tax victory against the IRS. The IRS claimed Amazon avoided paying some taxes by “grossly undervaluing” assets the company transferred to its Luxembourg subsidiary. US tax judge Albert Lauber ruled in favor of Amazon by deciding the IRS was not able to determine the assets’ worth.
Eastern Washington
Fairchild Air Force Base has taken on the 384th Air Refueling Squadron. It was announced Thursday that a tanker refueling squadron, including nine aircrafts and their personnel, will be moving to Fairchild.
Spokane police request a larger force and more permanent leadership. They also released, through a company culture audit of 100 department members, a desire to teach the public more about the pressures of working on the police force. Their requests are all so they can improve performance and overall morale.
Friday Funny
Gov. Inslee gave a speech to the United Nations yesterday. He spoke about his record on the environment, but omitted the part about sewage being dumped into the Puget Sound. The full video is below, Inslee comes in around minute 119.
