It’s not difficult to understand why Washington voters prefer the Republican-controlled state Senate’s budget to the Democrat-controlled state House’s budget. A new Elway poll reveals that a plurality of respondents (48%) favor a plan that forces the state to live within its means and use existing revenues to increase spending on public education, while 43 percent would “increase education spending while avoiding cuts to other services, even if that means raising taxes.”
The percent that favor Senate Republican’s education-first approach rather than tax increases increases when taking into consideration party affiliation. Two thirds of Republicans and a whopping 54 percent of independents favor the state Senate’s approach to funding education.
