The new Highway 520 bridge will open for commuters soon. Westbound traffic will be able to use the bridge on April 11. Eastbound lanes will open April 25.
To celebrate, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) held a celebration last weekend. Thousands of people (over 25,000) were allowed to walk the bridge.
Only, true to their history, WSDOT botched the celebration. They managed to create a traffic jam… with people.
As one could imagine, the situation created anxiety among those present. The Seattle Times recounts the drama:
“Shortly after 3 p.m., officials announced no more visitors would be admitted onto the bridge, but those already there could stay. Not that they had much of a choice.
“As people waited for the buses, anxiety swirled. When a helicopter flew by, some partygoers waved their hands and shouted, ‘Help us!’ Simply walking away wasn’t allowed, for safety reasons.”
WSDOT really can’t do anything without causing a traffic jam, not even throw a celebration for a bridge opening.
Gee, imagine if they actually were trying to reduce to congestion.
