The Washington Education Association is at it again… doing what it does best by making education policy all about adults, not children.
Looking after its own interests first comes naturally to the powerful teachers union. So, the fact that the WEA is—once again—“using children as pawns” for its selfish ambitions should come as no surprise.
The WEA latest self-serving move? A strike against standardized tests. The WEA has long advocated against standardized tests, now they are using parents to do it for them and children as pawns.
As part of its strike, the WEA is working to convince parents to opt their children out of taking standardized tests. Essentially, the organization entrusted with the education of children is asking parents to overlook the interests of their own children and do what’s best for them, one of the most powerful unions in Washington State.
The Tri-City Herald,
“[The WEA] is wrong to recommend children opt out of the tests as a way to promote an adult agenda…
“From a parent’s view, seeing how your child scored on a standardized test helps you see where your child excels and where he or she needs more help.
“From the district’s point of view, funding can be tied to taking those tests. Students who don’t take the test get an automatic zero.”
The teachers union is self serving. “Hire more teachers so we can get more union dues to line our campaign coffers to elect more union goons to the legislature to increase teacher pay, even if we can’t teach well and prepare our students for the real world.”

I would challenge you folks at Shift to actually talk to a *parent* who has made the decision to opt their kids out of the tests, and to see what that parent’s reasoning was. I can guarantee you that it had absolutely nothing to do with the WEA or unions.
And I’ll note–again–that the Shift you’re defending here is towards a full embrace of the Common Core State Standards, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (y’know, the test I keep telling you has never been given before), and all the other elements of the Obama education agenda. You’re speaking in favor of what has become a de facto federal takeover of our public schools–is that truly the Shift that you’re going for?
