Vermont Senator and self-avowed Socialist Bernie Sanders announced his presidential bid last week. Sanders—who has the backing of Seattle’s very own socialist, Kshama Sawant—will be running under the Democrat banner, a prospect the Washington State Democrat Party is rather pleased about.
In a recent email, WA Democrat Chair Jaxon Ravens, “Democrats have another candidate for President! On Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders announced that he’s in for 2016.” Now, in the best of times, Democrats wouldn’t be that excited about the candidacy of a man who, first and foremost, does not identify as a Democrat, but rather as a socialist. But, these are not the best of times for Democrats. On the one hand, Democrats’ have a small, lackluster bench of presidential prospects. On the other, the majority—including, it appears, Ravens—of Democrats have decided to embrace socialism as political identity.
