Matt Barreto, the professor who has run a polling operation for several election cycles at the University of Washington, has moved his “research” activities to UCLA. His departure leaves local media without a reliable liberal voice on voting patterns.
Barreto is best known for his work on Latino voting trends, though it was discovered after the 2012 general election that he based some of his “research” not on an actual poll of Latino voting, but rather by “pooling polls” to give him the result he wanted to publicize. There actually was not any exit polling done on Latino voting in Washington State in 2012.
Barreto further showed his non-research based approach – and leftist leanings – in a 2013 book titled “Change They Can’t Believe In: the Tea Party and Reactionary Politics in America.” His partnership in the Democrat-supported Latino Decisions polling firm has cemented his place a favorite source for anti-Republican quotes about voting.
