The people at the state Department of Transportation must believe that unemployment has ceased to exist in our state, based on the story about several ferry runs being shut down last Saturday, because Washington State Ferries “ran out of workers”. Actually, what the state ran out of – a long time ago, unfortunately – was a willingness to challenge the union monopoly over the ferry system, and hire workers who were actually willing to be on the job when they are scheduled. Given the importance of the ferry system to economic well-being of several counties in Western Washington, we can’t wait to hear from some of the Democrat legislators representing those areas, demanding the state fix this problem – anyone ready to step up?
